Doggies at Budleigh

It’s April and I haven’t been out fishing in any shape or form since the start of the year – shocking!

The weather was looking good for this weekend but money constraints necessitated a cheap local session. I found a couple of frozen mackerel in the bottom of the freezer and headed to one of our local beaches to try my luck just as it was getting dark. Unfortunately low tide also coincided with this but I figured it couldn’t be helped and I would give it a go anyway. I always feel the darkness is more important when shore fishing than tide if you can’t get both aligned so still felt reasonably confident.

I set up two beachcasters out front of Budleigh Salterton seafront tackled up with small strips of mackerel on each and made myself comfortable.

We had a gentle onshore breeze which meant it wasn’t too cold and the rods were pretty still so any bites would be easy to spot. We had two good bites both of which resulted in doggies in the first hour and a half and I felt that as it was now properly dark by the time I’d chucked the second one back we could be in for a few more. Wishful thinking though on my part as the wife was cold by this point – and I learnt that when she’s cold the fishing ends…

Still – nice to be out and at least I didn’t blank in what was a very short trip.
